The Most Underused Pedal On Your Board (Expression Pedals Explained)
What if the single most useful thing on your pedalboard isn't a pedal at all? It's also probably the most underused tool in the guitar world. I'm talking about the expression pedal, and today I want to walk through how it lets you get a lot more control out of gear you likely already own.
We'll start as simple as it gets: one expression pedal controlling one effect. By the end, I'll show you how I use expression to cut my entire preset list in half, which is really the reason I recommend a guitar expression pedal to most players. It lets you focus on playing guitar instead of staring down at your board.
What an expression pedal actually does
An expression pedal is essentially a couple of extra arms you didn't have before. Not literally, but functionally: it lets you reach over and tweak your pedals while both hands stay on the guitar. Instead of stopping to reach down and bump up your delay mix, or crouching to speed up a rotary mid-song, you move the treadle with your foot, and any number of knobs across one or several pedals change in real time while you keep playing.
Under the hood, it works a lot like a volume pedal. There's a potentiometer inside. Your effect pedal sends a voltage down the cable to the expression pedal, the expression pedal changes that voltage depending on where the treadle sits in its travel, and sends it back. The effect pedal reads that returning voltage as a position, heel, toe, or somewhere in between, and sets whatever parameter you've assigned accordingly.
Not every pedal can take expression
Before you go buy one, know that not every pedal supports expression control, on guitar, bass, or otherwise. It needs to be built into the hardware. A pedal like a TS9, for example, has an input, an output, and a power tap, but nothing for an expression connection, so there's simply nothing to plug into. A pedal like the HX Stomp, on the other hand, gives you both a MIDI in and out on the side and a dedicated expression and footswitch jack on the front panel, so you can connect expression a couple of different ways.
This is also where a lot of the common frustration lives for players running bigger modeling and multi-effects units. If you're using something like a Quad Cortex, a Fractal FM3, or a HeadRush, expression input is supported, but exactly how you assign a parameter to the treadle and get it responding smoothly varies quite a bit by platform and firmware version. The core idea stays the same across all of them though: check whether the hardware has an expression jack, and if it does, check the manual for how that platform wants parameters assigned.
If a pedal does have an expression jack, it's usually labeled EXP or EXPR. Even then, it's worth checking the manual to see exactly what that pedal lets you control with expression, since it varies from one to the next.
Get the cable right or nothing will work
This is the part that causes the most frustration, and it's simple once you know it. A normal guitar cable is TS, tip and sleeve, with two connection points. Expression pedals need TRS, tip, ring, and sleeve, which you can spot by the two black bands on the cable instead of one. Plug a standard TS cable into an expression jack and it typically won't work at all.
Even with the right cable type, there's no universal standard for how those three connections are wired inside an expression pedal. Most modern gear treats the tip as the signal wire, but not all of it does. That means you can have the correct TRS cable, plug everything in correctly, program it exactly right, and still end up with expression that runs backwards, toe acting like heel, or that doesn't sweep across the full range of the treadle. If that happens, it doesn't mean your gear is broken. It usually just means your pedal wants the tip and ring wired the other way around.
Some pedals have a polarity switch or a menu setting to flip this digitally, which means you can keep using a standard TRS cable. If yours doesn't, this is genuinely one of the most common custom cables we build at Goodwood: a TRS cable with the tip and ring connections inverted specifically for your expression setup. Worth checking your manual first though, since some pedals let you solve this in software instead. The Walrus Audio Canvas used in this video actually makes this a non-issue, letting you select the wiring type per output right on the pedal, so a standard TRS cable is all you need.
Setting up your first expression pedal
The simplest possible setup is one expression pedal plugged straight into a delay's EXP jack. Some pedals will ask you to calibrate the first time, rocking the treadle from full heel to full toe so the pedal learns its range. The Strymon Timeline, for instance, calibrates as you set your parameters: heel position, set your values, toe position, set your values, done.
Then you assign a parameter, say delay mix. Heel all the way down could mean no delay at all, toe cranked could mean mostly wet signal. One thing worth clearing up: you don't need to program the extremes at 0 and 100 percent. A knob can sit at the halfway point on heel and move just a small distance toward toe. You don't need massive sweeps for every parameter. Subtlety is usually the better move with expression.
Where expression really gets fun
Once the basic concept clicks, there's a lot of room to play. Assigning the treadle to the speed of a tremolo or rotary, heel slow and toe fast, lets you ramp the effect live while you play. Pitch pedals open the door to whammy-style dive bombs or other pitch effects controlled the same way. My favorite simple use is on reverb: heel fully dry, toe at 100 percent wet, giving you instant ambience on command, with a usable rhythm sound sitting somewhere in the middle for a verse or chorus.
Bringing expression into a MIDI rig
If you're running a MIDI-controlled board, this is where things really open up. Once your expression pedal connects into your MIDI controller, the controller sends MIDI expression data out to your board based on treadle position. Instead of one expression pedal permanently wired to one effect, it can now do something different for every preset across multiple pedals. Song one, it's controlling reverb. Song two, it's ramping delay while pulling back reverb mix. In the bridge, maybe it's tied to a volume block on a multi-effects unit. However you program it, that becomes the real limit, not the pedal itself.
There are two ways to approach expression over MIDI, and the difference matters. Option one sends a MIDI CC message that controls one, maybe two parameters directly, like just the delay mix. It's handy and I use it often, but it has real limitations.
Option two uses what most MIDI pedals call an expression CC number. This makes the pedal believe an actual expression pedal is physically connected to its expression jack, even though you're only sending MIDI messages from your controller. The difference is significant: now you can save an entire scene of settings at the heel position and another entire scene at the toe, mix, decay, tone, repeats, whatever you need, all moving together with a single treadle sweep. This is the more global approach, and it repeats across as many MIDI-controlled pedals as your rig needs. The key detail to remember: those expression parameters live on the pedal itself, not in the MIDI controller. The controller only holds the expression CC message that tells the pedal an expression pedal is present.
Cutting your preset list in half
Here's the practical payoff. If you build a preset for every song, you eventually notice a pattern: a lot of your presets are nearly identical, just with small tweaks. A verse might sit with a pulled-back hall reverb and delay, then the chorus needs more mix, more decay, more repeats. The old approach is two presets, a verse and a chorus, and tap-dancing between them.
With expression, that becomes one preset. You program the treadle to push mix, decay, and repeats up as you rock toward toe, heel is the verse, toe is the chorus. There's a bonus here too: if your pedal doesn't allow trails between presets, meaning a delay's repeats get cut off the instant you switch, expression sidesteps that entirely, since you're not changing presets at all. The transition between heel and toe is smooth, with no gap.
Multiply that across your whole setlist and instead of 40 presets, you might end up with 20 and an expression pedal doing the rest.
Expression isn't for every rig
If you're running fairly basic sounds with a handful of pedal combinations, I wouldn't bother with expression. It's added complexity that pulls focus away from playing guitar rather than adding to it. But if you're building preset after preset, or you're already running MIDI, expression can genuinely streamline your rig at a gig. You want to be thinking about your playing, not your pedalboard, so don't add this in blindly. Think through what you'd actually use it for before committing to the setup.
One last warning that comes with this much control: test everything before the gig. Run through every preset heel, toe, and everywhere in between to confirm it behaves the way you expect. The last thing you want is for something to go sideways mid-show with no idea how to fix it because it never got tested.
